Grand Canyon Tours

Frequently Asked Questions

Question:  What type of tours do you offer?

Answer:  Angel's Gate Tours offers three distinct types of tour in the Grand Canyon:

  1. A Grand Canyon Scenic Rim Tour (Click Here for Scenic Rim Tour FAQ's)

  2. We offer four Full Day Grand Canyon Adventure Hikes (Click Here for Adventure Hike FAQ's)

  3. Grand Canyon Overnight Backpacking Trips (Arranged on a custom basis.  Please call for details.)

Question:  What tour or hike is best for me?

Answer:  Many of our customers choose both the Scenic Rim Tour and an Adventure Hike.  Others participate in more than one Adventure Hike while staying at a local hotel.  This allows you to explore much of the Grand Canyon backcountry while still enjoying the comforts of a hotel, restaurant and nightlife.  Angel's Gate Tours has partnered with local hotels and can provide you with discounted rates, and will help to plan a perfect Grand Canyon vacation.  Call our Reservation Agents today at 1.800.957.4557 for more details.

Grand Canyon Scenic Rim Tour

- Frequently Asked Questions -

Question:    Where do we meet the tour?
Answer:We'll pick you up at your hotel!  Local pick up and drop off are included for the towns of Flagstaff, Williams and Tusayan.  In most cases we'll meet you in the lobby of your hotel.  If you're staying in Phoenix or Sedona, we'll arrange an easy and convenient location to meet you in Flagstaff.

Question:    Is this an all day tour?
Answer:Yes!  We guarantee at least five hours inside Grand Canyon National Park.  To the best of our knowledge, we spend more time at Grand Canyon then anyone else.  The actual length of the tour varies based on your pick up location.  If we pick you up in Flagstaff, the tour will last approximately 8 hours.

Question:What kind of vehicle do you use for the tour?  Are the groups sizes small?
Answer:Yes!  We travel in small groups of no more than 12 people.  We use large vans that have been retrofitted with luxury, reclining captains chairs with arm rests.  Our vehicles are arguably the most comfortable way to travel on the ground.  We NEVER fill our vehicles to full capacity.  This insures that you will have plenty of space and will never feel crowded.  A center isle makes it easy for everyone to get in and out of the vehicle.

Question:    Is everything included in the price of the tour?
Answer:Yes!  Your tour includes everything you might need:  hotel pick up, transportation, park entry fees and permits, lunch, ice cold sodas and water.  You should bring your wallet though, you may wish to purchase souvenirs or give your guide a gratuity at the end of the day.

Question:
What should we bring?  What should we wear?
Answer:Bring a camera of course!  A hat and sunscreen is always a good idea at high altitude, and sturdy footwear is recommended.  You should dress appropriately for the season.  Summer highs can reach the high 90's at the rim.  Thunderstorms are common during the late Summer and early Fall (a light rain jacket or umbrella is recommended).  Winter time highs range from 30-40 degrees and sidewalks may be icy.

Question:What sets you apart from other tour companies?
Answer:So many things!  Our company is owned and operated by Grand Canyon river guides and backpacking guides.  Our tour guides are true canyon stewards, that not only know more about the canyon, they've been there!  You will ride in comfortable first class vehicles (no bench seats), and your comfort is guaranteed by strict group size restrictions.  You'll look through high power telescopes, enjoy a delicious picnic lunch, you'll be relaxed and able to enjoy your day... the list is endless!  We promise that we'll spoil you for all other tours you will ever go on!

Question:Is the Imax movie included in the Scenic Rim Tour?
Answer:The Grand Canyon Imax is a good movie.  However, the most common comment we hear at the Grand Canyon is:  "You can't take pictures of this!" and "Pictures just don't do it justice!"  We would rather take you to the REAL hidden secrets of Grand Canyon that most people never discover.  We suggest that you purchase the Imax DVD from Amazon, and watch it before you travel.  However, if you absolutely have to see the movie at the theatre, simply ask your guide.  They will take you to the theatre and help you purchase discounted tickets.

Question:Are we allowed to explore and go into the canyon?
Answer:Yes!  By special permit arrangement we are allowed to take you into the canyon for unique vistas, and a more personal experience with the canyon.  Our guides will also allow you time for your own personal exploration.

Question:Is the Scenic Rim Tour OK for someone who doesn't want to hike?  Or for someone who can't walk far?
Answer:Yes!  Hiking into the canyon, and long walks are simply an optionSome folks prefer shorter walks, or may prefer to sit in the shade and contemplate the immensity of the canyon.  We are able to accommodate all needs and preferences on our tour.  Even within the same group!

Question:Are the group sizes small?  What kind of vehicles do you use?
Yes!  Hikes are restricted to group sizes of no more than seven people.  (Although, larger groups can be arranged on a custom basis.)  We will pick you up in a comfortable and spacious Suburban or Van.   Our vehicles are arguably the most comfortable way to travel on the ground.  To our knowledge, we are the only company that provides transportation to and from the trailhead.  This insures that you spend your time in the canyon, not trying to find your way to it

Question:    Is everything included in the price of our Adventure Hike?
Answer:Yes!  Your tour includes everything you might need:  hotel pick up, transportation to and from the trailhead, park entry fees and backcountry permits, a hearty lunch, ice cold sodas and water in the vehicles.  In addition, we provide day packs, hiking snacks, water bottles, rain ponchos and hiking poles (if desired) while on the trail.  Your daypack will have plenty of room for a camera, binoculars or any other personal gear you may wish to bring.  You should also bring your wallet as you may wish to purchase souvenirs or give your guide a gratuity at the end of the day.

Question:
What should we bring?  What should we wear?
Answer:Bring a camera of course!  Binoculars or other personal equipment are also allowed.  A hat and sunscreen is strongly encouraged, and sturdy footwear is required.  You should dress appropriately for the season.  Summer highs can reach the high 90's at the rim and may exceed 100 in the canyon.  Thunderstorms are common during the late Summer and early Fall (a light rain jacket is recommended, but ponchos are provided if you don't have one).  Winter time highs range from 30-40 degrees and trails may be icy; special traction devices (crampons) will be provided if necessary.

Question:What sets you apart from other guided hikes?
Answer:So many things!  Our company is owned and operated by Grand Canyon river guides and backpacking guides.  Our hiking guides are true canyon stewards, that not only know more about the canyon, they've been there!  Our guides have thousands of miles of experience in Grand Canyon.  You'll never wonder what is around the next corner, your guide will be there to answer all your questions about the geology, wildlife and unique human history.  We promise to spoil you for any other hike you ever go on!

Question:Are the Adventure Hikes right for my activity level?  How difficult are they?
Answer:Yes!  Each hike is different and is geared toward different physical activity levels.  The hikes range from mild to extreme.  And although you should always consult your doctor before engaging in any physical activity;  anyone in good physical condition should be able to successfully participate in all of our Adventure Hikes.

Question:Are the Adventure Hikes suitable for someone who is afraid of heights?
Answer:That depends.  Some of the hikes are very exposed others are not.  As a general rule, we suggest participating in our Scenic Rim Tour before taking part in an Adventure Hike.  Our Scenic Rim Tour is the best introduction to Grand Canyon, and will allow you to determine your comfort zone at the rim.
